Natyagruham


Natyagruham is a dedicated theatre group in Thiruvananthapuram established in 1978, by a group of theatre enthusiasts , under the leadership of Proff. R Narendra Prasad; renowned Malayalam critic, playwright, director and cine actor. The group has evolved as a centre of excellence in theatre experiment. Luminaries like Dr. Ayyappa Panicker, Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan, Vinayachandran etc. made it an abode of lively creative experimentation, with their dynamic presence and intellectual inputs. For the next two decades Natyagruham did many innovative and pathbreaking performances that included famous plays from Malayalam and English.

Apart from plays, Natyagruham is also credited with the unique distinction of being the chief exponent of ‘Cholkaazcha’; where stage performance by actors is used to put through the message of poetry more enjoyable and effective.Natyagruham’s plays were performed all over kerala and outside in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai etc. and has participated in theatre festivals like the National theatre festival, Sreeram festival etc.

Natyagruham has produced talents of State and National award winners.Bharat Murali, emerged as a seasoned actor through his performances at Natyagruham, who later moved to Cinema and won the coveted National Award for the best film actor in 2001. Pro. Aliyar ,Chairman, Natyagruham won the National award for the best commentator in 2015.

Natyagruham is one of the most happening theatre groups in Kerala.During the last three years Natyagruham organised and conducted as many as thirty programmes that included two major theatre festivals during 2014 and 2015. In 2014, it was a 4 day festival of 7 plays authored by the renowned play wright Dr. Ochery N N Pillai. During 2015 it was a 5 day festival of 9 plays by Pro. R Narendraprasad. The plays were presented by renowned theatre groups from across the state.Seminars, discourses and publication of books on their works were also the highlights of the festivals.

Natyagruham is an ensemble of talents for whom theatre is the passion. It continues its relentless efforts to promote and popularise meaningful theatre experience in Malayalam.


LATE PROF. R.NARENDRA PRASAD


Renowned teacher, critic, play wright, director, and actor. Worked with the Kerala university, Thiruvananthapuram and M G University, Kottayam. Was Director of the School of Letters, M G University. He also worked as Dean and Syndicate Member, M G University.

Author of seven books on Literary criticism, eighteen Plays and one Novel

His play ' Souparnika ' won the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy awards.

He won the State Film award for the Second Best Actor, for his performance in ‘Paithrukam’ malayalam film by Jayaraj, National award winner

Apart from staging all over Kerala, his plays were also staged at Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai the Middle East and in festivals like National and State Theatre Festivals, Sreeram festival etc.

He was the founder member of Natyagruham.Established in 1978, this group emerged as one of the best theatre groups during 1980s and 1990s. Apart from his own plays he has also made / directed stage adaptations of the famous malayalam novel ‘Sanidasa’, numerous modern malayalam poems and directed english plays like ‘Waiting for Godot’, The Swamp Dwellers, The Zoo story etc.

He was ever active in Theatre and Cinema simultaneously when the final curtain on his life was drawn on 3rd November 2003. Natyagruham, the theatre group,takes forward the mission initiated by him with renewed vigour and dedication.
